Founding software engineer

Magic Notebook is looking for a founding software engineer. Initially, you'll be working on a web app that connects people to a complex machine learning system.

We are creating a personal knowledge management and sharing platform. We make people's knowledge searchable and shareable.

Our founding team has collectively started companies that have raised over 50M in financing, and are graduates of Harvard, Yale, and Stanford. We have a stellar group of advisors, including the creator of Google Docs, and are based out of StartX in Palo Alto, CA, an accelerator for Stanford's top entrepreneurs.

Some of the challenges we have are algorithmic such as improving a machine learning system to help users get the information they need at the moment that they need it. Others are technical such as making queries performant for instant access on our web front end. The technologies we use include Node.js, Finagle, Elastic Search, Hadoop, Cocoa/Objective-C, and jQuery/backbone.js.

Requirements:

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in computer science or equivalent.
  • Substantial experience developing web applications.
  • Experience with Backbone.js or Node.js a definite plus, but not required.
  • Interest in and intuition for what makes a user experience simple, beautiful, and enjoyable.

We are committed to building an incredible engineering team. Two of our founders are developers - as founding engineer you'll be setting the tone for everyone who joins in the future. Part of the spirit of what we are doing goes beyond technical excellence, to connect with our users as people. We never lose sight of the fact that the product we are building is for people. Beauty, good design, and creating a community of users are fundamental values in everything we do.

You're going to need to hit the ground running and get familiar with our code base fast so that you can work alongside us to drive our first product to completion and launch. You will have to bring more than just knowing how to write great software fast - you need to see how to make things more beautiful, figure out what features really matter, create better user experiences, and be a full participant in building our community of users. You will need to be able to contribute to key product decisions from the outset, take ownership of a critical part of the product in a fast paced environment - and have the passion to build something that has true and meaningful impact for its users.
